A new era of sustainable synthetic rubber solutions

We have a broad portfolio of technologically advanced rubber materials that are driving positive change in the global automotive industry.

Focused on the mobility of tomorrow with a lower environmental footprint

At Synthos, we collaborate closely with global tire manufacturers as a leader in synthetic rubber innovation, developing advanced material solutions for high-performance tires that have less impact on the environment.

Our synthetic rubber grades for tire tread compounds can improve energy efficiency through lower rolling resistance, and offer better abrasion resistance for longer-lasting tires and fewer tire wear particles.

We are focusing all our efforts in developing sustainable, resource-efficient synthetic rubber solutions for both today’s and tomorrow’s forms of mobility. If we can reduce the environmental impact of our products, we are helping our customers to do the same.

We are investing in a green future

Our vision is a net-zero future for synthetic rubber and its applications. Our materials are essential to modern life and mobility but we recognize the environmental impact of our manufacturing processes and products, and we are dedicated to minimizing this impact throughout our operations.

Our goal is to manufacture all our synthetic rubber using only renewable or bio-based resources and efforts to increase the use of these raw materials throughout our value chain are well underway. All our synthetic rubber plants have ISCC Plus certification, and we were the first in the industry to offer our entire product portfolio as bio/circular-attributed materials under this certification.

Our scientists have developed an advanced bio-butadiene technology that uses renewable, bio-derived ethanol feedstock to produce synthetic rubber grades for the tire manufacturers – the largest customers of the synthetic rubber industry.

We are also investing in low- and zero-carbon energy sources and our Sustainable Development Strategy means we will be using entirely carbon-free energy by 2028.

Our synthetic rubber solutions

As the largest producer of synthetic rubber in Europe and the world’s largest producer of functionalized SSBR, Synthos stands at the forefront of the industry.

We operate three manufacturing facilities located in Germany, Poland, and the Czech Republic, which together have a combined annual production capacity of 760,000 metric tons. These plants produce a broad portfolio of high-quality, versatile elastomers used throughout the tire industry and in other technical applications including SSBR (SPRINTAN®), BR (SYNTECA®), ESBR (KER® and BUNA®), and HSR (KER®).

Our extensive capability enables us to lead in innovation and supply, meeting the demands for advanced materials solutions in global markets.

Research & Development

At Synthos Synthetic Rubber, polymer design and technology expertise form the foundation for innovation, while sustainability drives our research and development activities, closely aligned with our customers’ goals to significantly reduce CO2 emissions.

We operate two research and development centers in Schkopau (Germany) and Oświęcim (Poland), where our large team of world-class  chemists, technology and processing experts work to accelerate the improvement of our products and manufacturing processes.

Creating sustainable mobility together

We are building strong partnerships that harness science and leverage our influence to drive circular innovation and sustainable mobility.

Through close collaboration with tire manufacturers, we are accelerating innovation in green tires, aiming for a future where sustainability and performance always go hand in hand.

We are a partner of AZuR – Alliance for the Future of Tires – and fully support the Waste Tire Resolution calling for all tires used within the European Union be either reused or recycled in the EU, and that new tires be produced more sustainably.

We are active members of the Circular Rubber Platform, promoting the development and application of bio-based and recycled materials, serving as a dynamic hub that connects companies across the rubber and tire industry’s supply chain.

Our collaboration with Tyre Recycling Solutions (TRS) focuses on the marketing and future use of TyreXol™, a high-quality recycled powder derived from tires, in synthetic rubber formulations so we can provide more sustainable solutions for our customers.

Collaboration for innovation and change

We place great importance on collaborating with the next generation of polymer technologists and our R&D team works with universities worldwide on new and innovative research projects. In 2023, we also proudly launched the first Synthos Rubber Circularity Award, an academic-industry competition aimed at developing breakthrough technology platforms for synthetic rubber and tire compounds that address both climate change and market needs.
